Phish

Born in 1983 at the University of Vermont the original band consisted of Trey Anastasio and Jeff Holdsworth on guitar, Mike Gordon on bass, and Jon Fishman on the drums.
Percussionist Marc Daubert joined in the fall of 1984 but only stayed a few months. Page McConnell joined on keyboards in the fall of 1985 and Holdsworth left after graduating in 1986 leaving the lineup that lasted the rest of the bands career.

Over the years the band gained a huge loyal following second only to the Grateful Dead. In fact many Dead Heads crossed over after the death of Jerry Garcia in 1995. The band toured regularly and held yearly festivals at various east coast venues.

In October 2000 at a show at the Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, California they left the stage without saying a word after their performance as the Beatles “Let It Be” played. I was at that show and the rumor spread quickly through the crowd that they had broken up. The next day their website announced that in fact they would be taking an extended hiatus.

They reformed in 2002 releasing an album and doing some sporadic touring leading to their final festival in 2004 after which they called it quits.

So now it’s time to go Phishing!

Upon hearing the following song in concert I evolved from a curious onlooker to a true Phish head. From then on I made every show within 150 miles of my home.

One of my concert companions and fellow Phish head would sign along with his own version of the words: “Wash your face and drive me to Valencia”
